Is Free Better?

Just out of curiousity, what do you think?

$1/1 Olay Bar, Body Wash or In-Shower Body Lotion, exp. 11/30/12 (P&G 10/28/12)
Final Price $2.50 for 5 bars, or $.50 each

Simply Olay 1 Bar $1 at Dollar Tree
$1/1 Olay Bar, Body Wash, In-Shower Body Lotion or Hand and Body Lotion, exp. 11/30/12 (P&G 10/28/12)
$1/1 Olay Bar, Body Wash or In-Shower Body Lotion, exp. 11/30/12 (P&G 10/28/12)
Final Price FREE
(I know the Olay Simply won’t work at Dollar Tree but this is just an example!)

Free is free, but if you only have 1 coupon (I know, some of us are crazy and only get 1 paper), what do you think is the better deal?  You either get 1 bar totally free, or pay for 5 bars.  I am leaning towards the 5 bars just because if I only have 1 coupon, I want to get as much as I can for as low as I can.  But then again, free is free.

  1. My husband and I had this discussion about Eggo waffles the other day (as we stood in the frozen aisle.) We had a $1.50 off coupon, so a small box would have been nearly free but a large box would have been less than 50% off. We decided to go with the smaller box, just to keep the overall cost down, but those waffles went fast! We may have been better off with a larger box.

  2. If I only had one or two coupons I would go for the larger quantity. Feel like I have more for my money that way. But I often have 6 or more coupons of most items so I would do transactions to get the items for free.

  3. Its a tough call. I say if its something that you tend to use all the time or eat a lot of, then go ahead and get the bigger package. I tend to stick with the free stuff since I get inserts from neighbors and family so I have multiples to get more than one of the free stuff :) Sometimes I don’t though and I do tend to buy the smaller package to get a nearly free item. I would rather pay less and skip on it until I find a deal just as good and in the mean time I try other things that are nearly free which keeps the bills down and I have found that I tend to try more of an array of recipes and my family likes that we don’t have all the same stuff all the time! Variety is great!

  4. I am one of those crazy people that will only get one paper sometimes and I hate when a good deal like this comes up and I’m not ready! If its a store close by and I need other things from there, then I’ll go for the free one.

  5. It may be a moot point. Those P&G coupons say “Excludes Simply Olay”.
