How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

Fruit flies are in full swing this summer in our house and it’s been driving me crazy! Thankfully, my sister has been doing this little trick to get rid of them for years. It’s so easy.  First and foremost, if you have more than just a few flying around, you will definitely need to find your fruit fly source.  Clean up the floors, get the fruit off the counters, etc.  I was going CRAZY trying to figure out where the flies were coming from in my house.  I finally pulled out the old trash can we stuck in our garage room and guess what.  Full of fruit flies.  UGh! I had cleaned the fridge, the counters, poured cleaner down the drain, everything.   I was disgusted but SO relieved to finally have found where they were coming from.  Now I am just going to set out a trap and get rid of the rest.  Here is how to make a fruit fly trap:

Step 1: Get a jar. Throw in some gross fruit. Put a couple drops of Red Wine vinegar if you have it. If you don’t have it, don’t worry  You could use any kind of vinegar or even ketchup.  If you don’t have any of that, don’t worry.  Old fruit will still attract them.

Step 2: Cover the mouth of the jar with saran wrap, then use a rubber band to secure it.

Step 3: Roll up some left over Sunday ads into a cone with a small opening at the bottom. Tape it so it stays secure. Then, gently poke it into the saran wrap.

Done. Clean up your counters so there isn’t any other fruit to distract them, and put the bait trap near where the little boogers are hanging around. Within a few hours you should have quite a few of them in there… see, they can fly in and not out. Empty as needed!
